I lost a very special friend yesterday. Sara (Ch Shadowdale's Fire 'N Ice) had what was essentially a stroke on Thursday evening. It left her debilitated and unable to walk. She turned 10 years last October. She went to the bridge peacefully in my arms at 9:30 yesterday morning with the help of her friend Dr. Norman. I was the hardest decision I have ever had to make.
Sara touched everyone who met her with her bright loving personality and comic actions. She was Daddy's fishing dog, my best friend and the best puppy sitter I have ever seen. For years now she had taken over every litter born here after they were weaned. You could see that she wanted them very much and inspected each shortly after birth. She helped raise orphan pups of several breeds for friends of mine even after she was spayed by cleaning and loving them while I fed them. They were taught by her to have acceptable social behaviour, they were taught to share, and they were taught kindness, tolerance and love. She helped educate Brownies and school children to care for and respect pets. She brought a bit of sunshine into the lives of the residents of the retirement home.
Never did Sara object to another dog visiting but always accepted them as 'friend' even if she had to let them know who 'she' was, Sara was always willing to play. She never forgot her human friends nor did she ever forget who brought special treats for her. She would stare at Marg Marchand's purse or if it was accessible go through it for the treats she knew would be there. She would not leave Shirley Bell's side until the treat she brought was forthcoming (usually part of the dinner she had picked up while driving 3 hours to get here). Nobody didn't like Sara Lee. She was the barometer by which I accepted or rejected puppy buyers. If they could pass the 'Sara' test .... I don't know why but only once did she ever not let someone into my home. Her judgement was impeccable. She has left a big hole in our lives that won't easily be filled and I know that she is now quietly but firmly putting things in order over the Rainbow Bridge, that was her way.
If you got this far I would like
to thank you for letting me ramble. It took a lot of time and tears to write
this but I could do no less for my girl.
